I Have a Good Right Head and Left Head on my Shoulders
Or more specifically – right brain and left brain. I have both the skills of the left brain: logical, analytical, objectivity and language and the skills of the right brain: creativity, big picture thinking, expression and design. And that combination of skills is important for success.
No matter what you’re writing, your product will not be very effective if it never gets read. In today’s world, we are overwhelmed by information and messages. Cutting through that clutter and being heard takes a different kind of thinking.
Being able to speak both the languages of the left and right brain enables me to communicate well with everyone from engineers, accountants and computer techs to athletes, artists and inventors. For the former, I often help them find their own creativity and expression and help to focus and organize the latter to be able to get their thoughts communicated in a coherent fashion.
Nonattachment
We all have ego that can get in the way of creating good products. But as a freelancer, my focus is on you and your goals. Years of consulting – and some Buddhist books and lectures – have taught me nonattachment to my writing. My goals isn’t to write what I want to write – it’s to facilitate a process and deliver the product you need.
Not Just the Facts, Mam…Or Sir
I know that the facts are not enough to create effective communication. Facts are essential in communicating ideas but to engage people, you need something more, something to make it interesting, to give it context and meaning.
Humans are fundamentally storytellers. We see the world as a series of episodes rather than logical propositions. The best communication strategies recognize this and use it to their advantage by putting facts in context and delivering them with emotional impact.
